Drag Queen Beauty Secrets for the Cosmetically Challenged

Have you ever wondered how drag queens such as RuPaul, Miss Guy, and the Lady Bunny look more gorgeous than many genetic girls? I do all the time! Yes, I admit I am from time to time visited by that green-eyed monster known as jealousy (who I hope has enough sense to wear eyeshadow in earth tones to bring out those green eyes!). If you too want to be beautiful like these divas of drag, then follow their beauty tips.

RuPaul:"I can do my makeup in an hour, if I have to. I like to take three hours, and that includes my bath. You can't rush glamour. I do contouring and lashes and lip liner, then blotting, another lipstick, and liner after that. My foundation is M.A.C. Studio Line Full Coverage N8. It used to be N7, but I'm not passing for a white woman anymore....The most masculine thing about me is my jaw. I'm telling secrets now: If I can overemphasize the eyes or the mouth and use hair to soften the line of my face, it de-emphasizes my jaw. Having big hair also helps me proportionately. Because my legs are so long, it lengthens the whole area from my shoulders up." from "Ru's On First" by James Servin, Allure Magazine February 1997

The Lady Chablis: "Where makeup is concerned, we're talking black eyeliner and red lipstick. The eyeliner, drawn in the crease of the eyelids, has proven to be this girl's best friend....Mine is by Maybelline, but y'can go ahead and get ripped off by Chanel and Elizabeth Arden if y'prefer....
I'm a faithful believer in red lipstick. It'll always be in, and it'll always be the most seductive color. Lip-liner is a good idea too, specially in a color that's a li'l darker than y'lipstick. This'll make y'lips protrude without the need for costly collagen implants. Natural looking colors are okay, but realize that I'm a girl who believes in vamping, honey. Vamp, vamp, vamp." - from "Hiding My Candy" by The Lady Chablis with Theodore Bouloukas

Varla Jean Merman: Nerf balls in her bra. - from "Drag Queens of New York" by Julian Fleischer

The Lady Bunny:
"She first lines her eyes with black liquid liner, swinging it out at the corners, a la Zsa Zsa Gabor and Barbara Eden....Above the black line, she places a white liquid eyeliner to make the eye 'pop out.' Next comes some frosty shadow on the lid and under the brow. She tops it all off with a darker shadow in the crease of the eye, drawn from the inner corner to the outer edge of the eyebrow. 'Why bother if it looks natural?....It should be fun, and it should be dramatic.'" -from "Dude Looks Like a Lady", Allure Magazine April 1995

Noby: Max Factor International Pan Stik, applied with fingers or a cosmetic sponge. "It's almost like another layer of skin." Allure also calls her the "Queen of Contour.": "She shadows her nose - a line of brown powder on each side of the bone, as well as some inside the nostrils - to get rid of the button problem. She then dusts with brown from the base of the ear along the jawbone to the chin and - most important - under the chin itself, to give it more definition. And for her cheekbones: a thin line of brown under the bone (never on top). 'What I'm going for...is for people to look at me and say 'How did you do that?'" - from "Dude Looks Like A Lady", Allure Magazine, April 1995

Tora: on false eyelashes - "Tora advocates putting little beads of glue along the edge of the false eyelash (not the eyelid:'You might hit yourself in the eyeball') and bending the strip into an arc that mirrors the eye's natural shape, all the while blowing on the glue until it becomes slightly tacky. Then line it up with your real lashes, press down, and bingo!" - from "Dude Looks Like A Lady", Allure Magazine, April 1995

Emerald: "This diva says makeup is her 'bible.' Emerald's basics: Revlon Age Defying Concealer, L'Oreal Lash Out Mascara, Revlon Pure Radiance Powder Bronzer, L'Oreal Mandarine Lipstick, and Max Factor International Pan-Cake."from "Dude Looks Like A Lady", Allure Magazine, April 1995
